Zuni Pecan pp34,879 was released January 3, 2023 By the USDA research team at College Station Texas. It was tested as 1996-01-0295 a cross between Pawnee (Mohawk x Starking Hardy Giant) and Waco (Cheyenne x Sioux). It was selected for large nut size and moderate bearing that should reduce the tendency to alternate bear.
Pollination is type 1. It should pollinate and be pollinated by Kanza and Lakota. Currently it shows good scab resistance but due to its parentage that may not hold up long term
Nuts are large at 48 nuts per lb. Kernels are cream in color. Shuck split is October 3, 9 days after Pawnee.
Nuts are larger than Pawnee and kernel percentage is 56%.
Zuni is recommended for central and western pecan growing regions with lower humidity. If you are currently growing Pawnee successfully, you should do very well with Zuni.
