Summersweet Ruby Spice is a pink flowered form of the species Clethra alnifolia. Ruby Spice was selected for its abundant fragrant flowers.
Ruby spice is a trouble free shrub that can bloom in full sun or heavy shade. Summersweets are a native shrub that originates along the east coast of the US from Maine to Texas. They are hardy in zones 3 to 8. The fragrant pink flowers are very attractive to honeybees and butterflies.
Fall color is golden to brown and the seed pods add interest to the winter landscape.
Summersweets are adapted to damp places and are unusual in their ability to thrive in shady wet areas. They do not care for swampy places that never dry, but can do well in areas that flood periodically. They spread naturally by underground root sprouts. They are not aggressive growers that might take over but, will fill in where they are wanted. They can be controlled by mowing regularly.
