Description
Rugosa Rose – Rosa Rugosa Was introduced to North American in the 1770’s. Originally from China, this hardy rose quickly became a gardeners favorite. The Rugosa Rose is a suckering shrub with prickles instead of thorns. The shrub has lush dark green crinkled leaves and produces pink or white single petaled fragrant flowers all summer long. The flowers are followed byfruits called rose hips that turn red or yellow as they ripen. These hips are high in vitamin C and are often made into a tasty tea to ward off colds.
Rugosa Roses are resistant to most foliar diseases. They are tolerant of salty locations. Hardy from zones 2 to 7, this rose will grow almost anywhere. They prefer a well drained soil but do well in most soil types including clay. They max out at about 4′ tall and will spread slowly by root suckers.
