Description
Hales Papershell Shagbark Hickory is the first Hickory named and propagated. It was first grafted around 1870. The nuts are very large and blocky for a Shagbark Hickory and the shells are very thin. It is prone to weevil damage. It will bear some nuts by itself but will do better with a pollinator tree. Even though this tree has been around a long time, it is said to still be among the best for shelling qualities and for flavor.
