American Snowbell

Description

American Snowbell – Styrax americanus, is a native flowering shrub of the Southern United States. In the wild, it grows from Virginia west to Missouri and south to Florida. It is hardy in zones 5 to 9 so it can be grown farther north.

American Snowbell averages 6′ to 8′ tall with the form of a rounded shrub. It has a thin wispy twig structure and bright green leaves. The shrub is covered with white bell shaped flowers in June and July. These flowers are loved by both native bees and honeybees and come at a good time of year for pollinators.

Snowbells like a cool moist location with an acid soil. They will certainly benefit from high shade especially in the afternoon. Even within its natural range, you can expect some tip dieback during severe winters
