Henry’s Chestnut – Castanea henryi is a timber type Chestnut from China. What we have are seedlings of Castanea henryi of unknown parentage. It is unknown if they are pure seedlings or crossed with ordinary Chinese Chestnuts. At any rate, Henry’s Chestnut is a vigorous timber type Chestnut. It tends to grow tall and straight, compared to ordinary Chinese Chestnut Trees. The nuts are medium sized and the burs contain a single nut, more like a Chinkapin Tree. They seem to be as blight resistant as other Chinese types and would make an interesting contribution to a woodland centered wildlife planting, with the possibility of a timber harvest down the road.
