Description

TiTi – Cyrilla racemiflora,  pronounced TieTie, is also known as Swamp Cyrilla and Leatherwood is a native of the deep south. It is hardy to zone 6 so, it can be brought out of the swamps and piney woods and grow in more domestic environs. Beekeepers love this little tree. It blooms in June and July forming clusters  of showy white nectar filled flowers.

TiTi is a large shrub/small tree typically 10′ to 15′ tall but exceptional specimens may reach 30′ in their old age. The trunk and branches are usually contorted as the young stems seek what sunlight they can find. It prefers full sun to partial shade and does not compete well for resources. It will grow best in moist acidic well drained soil with high organic matter. Once established it is quite tough.

For gardeners, TiTi makes a good specimen plant, perhaps a center point in a garden bed. It can also be used in a shrub border with good effect. Beyond its attractive blooms, TiTi comes alight in the fall with bright orange and red as the leaves fall. In the deep south it can remain partially green throughout the winter.
