A Little Help Choosing Pecan Trees

I am often asked for a little help choosing pecan trees. If you want a few trees for your own nuts, you might appreciate a little help in choosing trees that will work for you. There are many choices and we are often asked, “what are the best trees for my place?”. Pecan Trees are adaptable to many different regions of the country, from south to central Mexico,  all the way north to Iowa. There are microclimates that allow them to produce outside these areas but those areas are small and inconsistent. Varieties have been selected that thrive in certain areas and not so much in others. So, choosing the right trees for your area is important.

Disease resistance is important to home growers, so that further shortens the list. All trees listed would be considered “papershell” type pecans.

This map breaks things into 4 general regions. I will list pairs that I think are best for each region, as well as, a list of alternates. The Ultra northern region is untested ground. Some people are having success in this area and others are not. Trees will live in this area but may or may not produce. North of these areas, thin shelled Shagbark and Shellbark Hickories are your best bet.
