Mobile guard to protect trees from the weedeater
Weedeater Disease is one of the leading killers of small trees. It doesn’t matter how careful you are, the physics of the weedeater will swing it into whatever you are trying to protect.
I wish I was smart enough to have invented such a thing but I suppose sometime I saw something like this so I made one.
It is a simple guard made of a peice of pipe. In this case a piece of pvc I hade in the shop and an electric fencepost. Add a couple of zip ties and presto, you have a guard.
Cutting the slot in the pipe for the tree is the most dangerous part of this. The pipe must be fixed so it can’t roll or you might get hurt. A jigsaw would be the safest way to cut it. My fencepost had a tab that was in the way so I cut a slot for that. Mark on either side of the post and drill holes for the zip ties and zip it together. 5 minutes and you are done. ( it took longer to assemble the pieces than to cut the parts and put it together).
